1st place has no options for good defense, and even if you have defense, it usually just gets stolen by boo anyways. Though unlike CTR, the AI is almost always right on your booty, so the second you’re hit, you’re in 2nd place, assuming you’re not hit again immediately. In CTR, you spin out, but still move forward a bit, so you don’t lose 100% of your momentum. When you’re hit, you completely stop and are either flung in the air, or just stay in place. I know the strat of keeping a coin for boo to steal, but it’s pretty common for me to have both my items stolen back to back, if I’m not just outright hit with lightning). The CTR hard AI has maxed out stats, and only on certain tracks with massive short cuts can even be lapped.) I feel like I’ve accomplished something whereas in MK8 I feel I’m punished for being in 1st with worse items, and regularly having no defense against the barrage of items heading my way (assuming my item isn’t stolen by a boo. I’m not a fan of that at all, because in CTR, when I lap the AI (even the hard mode AI which is item spam hell. I have 350 hours of playtime in CTR NF, and very rarely do items ruin the experience for me, whereas MK8 my luck is incredibly bad (regularly blue shelled all 3 laps, averaging about 2 if I’m lucky) and I’m still learning to deal with all the speed classes, so my lines aren’t always the tightest, as well as my knowledge on hitting shortcuts being very limited, so even if I feel I’m smoking the AI, they’re right behind me since I think I remember hearing that the AI is programmed to always be pretty close to you. If I’m in 1st, I get no items besides coins and if I’m lucky a banana or 2 (basically 2 item crates required to get an item to defend yourself from the 5-10 red turtle shells 2nd place has a tendency to shove right up my booty). The only problem I have is I don’t feel I’m rewarded for playing well. I only have about 20 hours in MK8 Deluxe, and have gotten all the trophies for 50, 100, 150, and mirrored 150cc, so I’ve got some time to get used to the mechanics. MK8 is fun though the game tries its best to ruin the experience as often as possible by making luck the determining factor of most (if not all) races. Though as detrimental as getting hit in MK8 is, losing fire in CTR will absolutely kill your time, and if 2nd is holding flame, you basically lose by default, so the game encourages skill with that added element of luck to keep it a bit interesting (though I personally wish there was a lack of items since the game is chaotic enough trying to take tight lines without losing flame) There’s plenty of options to protect yourself when you’re in first, and there’s items that’ll help you work your way up to first. Lastly, and most important, items don’t entirely hinder the experience into a luck based mess. Sacred fire and blue fire makes every course feel fast, even Slide Coliseum (which has no boost pads, so only regular fire) has interest Tech I enjoy using throughout Now why do I think this? Well firstly track design, the courses feel fantastic to play.Ĭontrols are as perfect as you can get with a Kart racer In a way I’d say I’m a fan of both games, though for me personally CTR NF is my personal favorite of the 2 by a pretty significant margin. (This post isn’t intended to sway you one way or another, it’s just an opinion piece, and I am excited to see the perspective y’all have regarding this post that I just spent way too much time typing up at 1 AM lol)
